Physiotherapy and dizziness
Dizziness is a prevalent issue in our everyday life and we can all relate when someone tells us that he/she is feeling dizzy. More often than not, we put dizziness down to feeling sleep deprived or being dehydrated, and it goes away on its own. However, what happens when you have it so frequently or if it is not improving? Sounds worthwhile checking it out as there may be more to it!
Most of the time, dizziness is associated with either our neck, head or inner ears (or an interaction in between all three). Here at The Physio Space, we are trained to assess and diagnose where the issue lies, and we work closely with other medical practitioners and healthcare providers in your treatment planning and management. While there are conditions that require further reviews and investigations, there are also conditions that are more straightforward and treatable in the clinic such as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV).
BPPV is often described as a dizziness or vertigo that is provoked from a change in head position such as turning your head quickly, getting out of bed or standing up fast. It is usually quick to come and go, but can occasionally feel as if the world is catching up to you in a delayed manner. It is caused when small crystals are found floating within the inner ear or are attached to a part of the ear that they don't belong to, both of which can give your brain mixed signals and symptoms of dizziness.
Assessing and treating BPPV involves positional manoeuvres of the head and trunk to help reposition the crystals in the ears and correct the signals to the brain. Whilst most people will experience the one off episode of BPPV there are some cases where there are multiple reoccurrences. Simple presentations of BPPV can be treated and symptoms relieved in one or two physiotherapy sessions, however more complex cases, including those involving multiple inner ear canals require a longer treatment plan over weeks or months.
If you experience symptoms of headaches and dizziness, whether it be one off or frequent reoccurrences don't hesitate to contact our clinic on (02) 4861 1223 to book in an assessment today.
