Torticollis
New to parenthood? Have you noticed your baby has a preference to turn or hold their head to one direction? If yes, we recommend a screen for torticollis.
Torticollis is when the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle in the neck becomes shortened and contracted causing the neck to twist or rotate to one side. In babies, this can be caused by the position in the womb or positional preferences when sleeping etc.
Common signs include:
1. Trouble moving head to one side i.e. Working hard to turn toward you or getting frustrated when unable to turn head
2. Preference to look to one side
3. Head tilt in one direction
4. Flat surface on the back of the head (Plagiocephaly)
If your baby is presenting with any of these signs, it is important to be checked by your GP or physiotherapist. Sometimes torticollis can be associated with other musculoskeletal problems such as hip dysplasia, foot deformities and Plagiocephaly, which can also be screened by your GP and physio.
Fortunately, in most cases infant torticollis is easily treatable through positional changes, stretches and increased tummy time.
Our physiotherapists Emma and Beck are able to assess for torticollis in babies and prescribe strategies and activities for parents to treat the condition. Call for an appointment today 4861 1223.
